Jane Banks Campbell
and Lori Jill Smith, the authors of “Postcard History Series – Manchester,” will hold a book signing
event at Beans Creek Winery, Dec. 8, 2013, from 2p.m. to 4p.m.
Jane Banks Campbell and Lori Jill Smith are Manchester residents.
A number of local people helped them collect postcards and information about the pictures. Weldon Payne, former editor of
the Manchester Times and well-known Southern author, wrote the foreword for the book.
The authors used more than 200 vintage postcards to show the
history of Manchester from the early 1900s through the 1970s. The postcards depict every aspect of our town: the square and
downtown, restaurants and other businesses, country life, scenic roads, the Duck River, lakes, waterfalls and much more. Many
with a connection to Manchester will recognize ancestors or familiar places depicted in the photographs.
Most of the postcards are of the real-photo type, which involves
a photograph being directly printed onto postcard paper. Many of the pictures were photographed and published by Hugh Doak,
editor and publisher of the Manchester Times for 42 years (1916 – 1958).
The event coincides with Beans Creek Winery’s Open House,
which will be on Dec. 7 and 8, 2013. Beans Creek Winery will offer a variety of hors d’oeuvres. Winery staff
will be on hand to suggest wine pairings. Guests will enjoy wine tastings. Winemakers, Tom and Josh Brown, will give exclusive
Champagne tours from 1p.m. to 4p.m.
